"Healing architecture" can help the
condition of the mind and body. With this objective, Good
Shepherd Hospital set out to create a benchmark wellness center.
The site is relatively small for a facility
of its size, thereby necessitating compactness in the building
to allow sufficient area for parking. Further complicating
matters was that the site has a significant southeast-to-northwest
slope.
These proved to be assets.
A two-story facade along the west acknowledges
the adjoining major roadway, and as a visitor enters the site,
the scale drops to a pedestrian orientation along the east.
The jury said, "A nicely designed space
that was made to look very inviting."
